Once in a while, our trusty white goods can fail us whether in a technical sense or in that they are outdated, slow and just in need of a total upgrade. Having shopped around and found a fridge with features that fit your lifestyle like a velvet glove, it’s time to get rid of that old ancient appliance once and for all and welcome in your new fridge. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just tossing out onto the pavement for the dustmen to pick up as there are a number of health, legal and environmental issues.

At Village Domestic Supplies we have been supplying customers with great deals on fridges for over thirty years and are aware of the importance of proper refrigeration disposal.

How A Fridge Works

fridge coils

Fridges operate by turning liquid refrigerant into vapour and then sending it up through a network of metal plated coils. As the vapour makes contact with the metal on the inside of the coils it condenses into liquid. Within this transitioning process, the heat is sucked out of the coils creating a cold state which is maintained by repeating the gas to vapour to liquid process over and over again in a perpetual cycle.

Refrigerant Chemicals Are Harmful To Humans

Toxic

The chemical refrigerant or “coolant” used in fridges and freezers is known as Freon, is usually rich in fluorinated hydrocarbons. Freon is very dangerous because it is odourless and restricts oxygen to the lungs heat and brain if inhaled. It is very important that you do not try to dismantle an old fridge in a confined space if you are not a trained appliance technician. Direct contact between skin and refrigerant chemicals can also be very hazardous so contracting your local council or a specialist removals person is essential. If directly exposed to Freon, an individual can suffer a range of symptoms such as chemical burns, a cough, nausea, a headache, vomiting. seizures, difficulty breathing and irritations.

You Could Be Fined For Fly Tipping

fly tipped fridges

If you are tempted to drive your old fridge around in the dead of night looking for an empty skip then think again. Fly tipping is a serious crime and could attract a fine of up to £50,000 and five years in prison depending on the severity of the offence under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act. Fridges also contain large amounts of un-biodegradable plastic which are very unsightly when dumped in a natural environment.

Old parts can be recycled

Whilst your fridge may have had its day performing duties inside your house, it still contains valuable materials that can be passed on for re-usage. Components such as the compressor are valuable and can be worth around £200 per ton and can be reconditioned for further use.
